HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is the standardized international code used to classify goods for taxation. In India, HSN is mandatory on every GST invoice and on the Table 12 HSN summary in GSTR-1. The HSN determines the GST rate (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%) applied to the item.
From October 2020 (Notification 78/2020-Central Tax): manufacturers with turnover > ₹5 cr must report 6-digit HSN on B2B invoices; those with ≤ ₹5 cr report 4 digits on B2B and 4 digits on B2C above the limit. Exports and imports always require 8 digits.
This tool indexes the ~150 most-searched manufacturing HSN codes. For an exhaustive lookup, use the official CBIC HSN search at cbic-gst.gov.in (Services > User Services > Search HSN code) or the GST portal at gst.gov.in. Both return the current GST rate as well.
Yes. Rates shown are as per the latest GST Council notifications applicable in 2026. GST Council typically meets quarterly and may revise rates. Always cross-check with the official CBIC GST rate finder before raising large-ticket invoices.
No ERP can auto-classify a brand-new product because classification requires judgment on material, function, and use. But once an item is added to your item master with its HSN, ERPDrive enforces HSN as mandatory and propagates it to every purchase order, invoice, e-way bill, e-invoice, and GSTR-1 Table 12. This prevents missing or mismatched HSN on transactions.
HSN is used for goods (e.g. 8708 for auto parts). SAC (Services Accounting Code) is used for services (e.g. 9988 for job work). The reporting structure on GSTR-1 Table 12 is similar for both, but the codes come from different chapters of the GST schedule.
