A Bill of Materials (BOM) is a structured list of every raw material, component, sub-assembly, and quantity required to manufacture one unit of a finished product. In Indian manufacturing, multi-level BOMs are common where sub-assemblies themselves need further components.
Why It Matters
A BOM is the single source of truth for what goes into your product. Without it, you cannot calculate material requirements, roll up costs, manage engineering changes, or trace quality issues back to their source. For Indian MSME manufacturers, a well-maintained BOM is what separates a spreadsheet-based factory from a controlled, scalable operation.
BOMs enable MRP (Material Requirements Planning), accurate product costing, alternate material planning, and engineering change management. They also drive inventory deductions on production, quality inspection plans, and even warranty tracking.
Example with Indian Context
Consider a brake caliper manufactured by a Pune-based Tier-1 auto supplier. The Level 1 BOM might list the caliper housing, piston assembly, seal kit, 4 bolts, and brake pad pair. The piston assembly itself is a Level 2 BOM containing the piston body, O-ring, and dust boot. Each raw material has an HSN code, a preferred vendor, and an alternate. When the supplier gets an order for 5,000 calipers from Maruti, MRP explodes the multi-level BOM and generates purchase indents for 5,000 housings, 20,000 bolts, 5,000 seal kits, and so on, netting off current stock and open purchase orders.

How ERPDrive Handles It
ERPDrive supports multi-level BOM with unlimited depth, version control, effective-from dates, alternate materials, scrap percentages, and automatic cost roll-up. Engineering change orders update BOMs with full history. MRP explodes BOMs instantly against open production orders to generate purchase indents, and costing rolls up raw material, labour, and overhead for accurate product pricing.
