For Factories Outgrowing Marg

ERPDrive vs Marg ERP for Manufacturing

Marg is a dependable billing and distribution platform. For manufacturers running BOMs, production orders, job work and quality gates, Marg was never the target customer. ERPDrive is built ground-up for Indian factories.

Marg Is Strong for Pharma Distribution and FMCG Billing. Manufacturing Is a Different Problem.

Marg ERP has powered Indian pharma chemists, FMCG distributors and general trade for decades. Counter billing, batch expiry tracking, scheme management and channel sales are its comfort zone. That heritage shows: the interface, the reports and the vocabulary all speak distribution.

Manufacturers who buy Marg for billing often hope to grow into it for production. What they find is a thin production voucher, a single-level BOM, no real work center concept and no quality module. Scheduling, shop floor capture, job work challan flows under Rule 45, ITC-04 filings and supplier COA management all live outside Marg, usually in Excel and paper.

ERPDrive was designed for factories first. Multi-level BOMs, routings, work centers, job cards on tablets, SPC charts, PPAP documents, job work reconciliation and MRP are all core. On top of that sits a complete finance and GST module that replaces Marg's billing cleanly, so you do not carry two systems forever.

Six Manufacturing Gaps in Marg ERP

These are the specific areas where Marg's distribution DNA runs short for a real factory.

Single-Level BOM Only

Marg supports a simple list of components for a finished good. It cannot represent a pump with a sub-assembled motor that has its own bearing pack and winding kit. Versioning, ECN, effective dates and alternate items are not present. Manufacturers end up keeping master BOMs in Excel and re-keying them into Marg.

Thin Production Planning

Marg's production is a voucher: consume raw, produce finished. There is no work center loading, no finite capacity check, no visual Gantt, no routing across operations and no planned versus actual comparison. Schedulers still rely on whiteboards and WhatsApp to decide what runs on which machine.

No Quality Management

Marg has no IQC, IPQC or FQC plans, no SPC, no control plans, no PPAP workflow and no supplier COA capture. For ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 audits, quality has to be maintained in a separate QMS tool or paper registers, which breaks traceability back to batches.

Weak Job Work Tracking

Marg can print a challan, but it does not track the full principal-to-job-worker life cycle. Pending quantities at each vendor, scrap reconciliation, aging of material outside the factory and ITC-04 return preparation under GST Rule 45 are not first-class features.

No Shop Floor Data Capture

There is no operator terminal, no job card scanning, no downtime reason capture, no cycle time logging. Because no data is captured at the machine, OEE, first pass yield and operator productivity cannot be reported. Decisions about capacity rely on gut feel.

Desktop-First Architecture

Marg is primarily a desktop product with remote access layered on top. Multi-plant consolidation, cloud backups, mobile dashboards for the owner, and browser-based access for auditors and CAs are not its strength. ERPDrive is cloud-native with full mobile apps.

How to Move from Marg to ERPDrive

A four-step migration that protects billing continuity and your team's confidence.

1

Export Marg Masters

Export item master, party master, chart of accounts, opening balances, pending sales and purchase orders from Marg. Our team provides the CSV templates and field mappings so no data is lost in translation.

2

Design Real BOMs and Routings

Upgrade single-level Marg BOMs into multi-level structures with sub-assemblies, work centers, operations, standard labour times and overhead rates. Two to three days with our consultant gets this right.

3

Parallel Run

Keep billing on Marg for two to four weeks while production, job work and quality move to ERPDrive. Reconcile ledgers weekly. This shields the counter team while the plant team learns the new tools.

4

Full Cutover

On a chosen weekend, invoicing, e-way bills, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B switch to ERPDrive. Marg is retained for a year as a read-only archive. Your CA gets browser access to ERPDrive and finds every Marg report here, plus manufacturing dashboards that Marg never had.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from manufacturers evaluating ERPDrive against Marg ERP.

Marg ERP is best known for distribution, pharma trading, retail chemist and FMCG billing. Its production module is lightweight. It supports a basic single-level BOM and a simple production voucher, but it does not offer multi-level BOM, routing through work centers, finite capacity planning, shop floor data capture or in-process quality control. Manufacturers who start on Marg for billing typically hit a wall when they try to use it to run a real shop floor.

Marg's BOM feature is single-level and simple. You can define the components of a finished good, but nested sub-assemblies with their own BOMs, engineering change notes, alternate items and effective dates are not available. Cost rollup across levels, including labour rate per operation and overhead absorption, is not part of Marg. ERPDrive provides unlimited BOM depth, version control with ECN and automated cost rollup that updates standard cost the moment a component rate changes.

Marg does not include a quality management module designed for manufacturing. There is no incoming inspection plan, in-process inspection point, SPC chart, PPAP document control or supplier COA handling. For ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 audits, quality evidence has to be maintained outside Marg in Excel, paper registers or separate QMS tools. ERPDrive ships with IQC, IPQC, FQC, SPC, 8D, PPAP and APQP modules built in.

No. ERPDrive supports a parallel run of two to four weeks. During this period your sales counter continues in Marg while production, BOM, job work and quality move to ERPDrive. Once the team is comfortable, invoicing, e-way bills, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B switch over in one weekend. We migrate item master, party master, opening balances and pending orders from Marg using CSV templates, so no billing history is lost.

Marg's production module is essentially a production voucher that consumes raw material and produces finished goods. ERPDrive gives you planned production orders, work center loading, a visual drag-and-drop Gantt, finite capacity checks, shop floor job cards, operator scanning and real-time OEE. Where Marg answers the question of what was produced, ERPDrive answers what should be produced, on which machine, by when, and how efficiently it actually ran.

Marg's entry pricing is low because it is sold as desktop billing and stock software. Once manufacturers add multi-user licenses, remote access, custom reports, AMC and third-party add-ons for BOM or production, the effective cost climbs closer to ERPDrive. ERPDrive is cloud-based with no server to maintain, includes manufacturing, quality and job work in the base license and ships updates automatically. For a 15 to 50 user factory, total cost of ownership is usually in the same range or lower.
