What is GST E-Invoice (IRN)?

E-invoicing is now mandatory for most Indian manufacturers. Here is what you need to know.

A GST E-Invoice is a B2B invoice that is uploaded to the government Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), which validates it and returns a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and QR code. The IRN must appear on the printed invoice.

Why It Matters

E-invoicing is mandatory for Indian businesses above the turnover threshold (INR 5 crore as of 2025). Invoices without a valid IRN are not legal GST documents and the buyer cannot claim input credit. Manual IRN generation on the IRP portal is slow, so integration with your ERP is essential.

Example with Indian Context

An auto parts maker raises a tax invoice for INR 4,50,000 to Tata Motors. Her ERP automatically sends the invoice JSON to the IRP, receives IRN and QR code within seconds, and prints them on the dispatch copy. The e-way bill is generated in the same step, saving 10 minutes of portal data entry per invoice.
